Penalties for Theft in Louisiana

Like most states, Louisiana punishes offenders for theft based on the value of the stolen property. The penalties are as follows:

  • Stolen property valued at less than $1,000. This is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in prison and a fine of up to $1,000.
  • Stolen property valued between $1,000 and $5,000. This is a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $3,000.
  • Stolen property valued between $5,000 and $25,000. This is a felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
  • Stolen property valued at $25,000 or more. This is a felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
