Deadly auto accidents do not discriminate based on age

Every occupant of a vehicle, regardless of one's age, is vulnerable in a crash. From Louisiana residents who have lived long lives to those who have barely begun theirs, auto accidents do not discriminate when it comes to who lives and who dies. Even those who are fortunate enough to survive may suffer serious, permanent and debilitating injuries that affect the rest of their lives.

Any loss of life is unacceptable on Louisiana's roadways, but people tend to feel more of a sense of outrage when it happens to a young child whose life was cut short by someone else's mistake or error in judgment. Such an occurrence can make the death of a 1-year-old baby even more difficult to bear. A baby recently suffered critical injuries in the same crash that took the lives of two adult family members in the same vehicle who died later at a hospital in the area.

The crash occurred on U.S. 190 at approximately 10 a.m. A 23-year-old man, who also died in the crash, was traveling west on the highway when his vehicle drifted into the path of the victims' eastbound vehicle. Troopers with the Louisiana State Police suspect that the westbound driver was impaired when the accident happened, but toxicology results are not yet back to confirm that suspicion.

In addition to the other details of the investigation into this tragedy, that piece of information could help surviving family members establish negligence in wrongful death claims. Even though the driver did not survive the crash, such claims could be filed against his estate. If successful, damages could be awarded to help defray the financial losses that nearly always accompany fatal auto accidents.
