Living with a traumatic brain injury

Each year, numerous Louisiana residents are involved in accidents of various types. Many of them suffer a traumatic brain injury, which could leave them with lifelong challenges. Some victims may require medical and additional care for the rest of their lives, and others may not be able to continue to work.

Part of the problem is that no two brain injuries are exactly alike. In addition, the brain can be fickle. An injury to the same area of the head could result in different consequences for two different people. Sufferers may not realize that their memory issues are attributable to their injuries. When memory issues are bad enough, it can be a challenge to get through the day.

This happened to a Washington man. His job became too stressful, and he had trouble coping with it. Yet, no one suggested that he receive occupational therapy to assist him in making adjustments. Finally, an occupational therapist told him that he may not be able to return to work and recommended a support group.

Others may forget words, repeat themselves or even have physical issues with their limbs. For instance, one woman's entire left side went numb after a blow to the head. She is no longer able to drive a truck with her husband, so they both lost their jobs. Somehow, the woman even lost her workers' compensation benefits.

Sadly, this Washington woman's story is not as uncommon as many would prefer to believe. Finding a new way to live after a traumatic brain injury often presents a challenge to many people here in Louisiana and elsewhere. For many, the financial toll only adds to an already stressful situation. If an individual's injuries were due to the negligence of another party, it may be possible to resolve at least the financial issue through the filing of a personal injury claim.
