Auto accidents often happen during lane changes

While driving in town, crashes tend to happen most often at intersections. When on Louisiana's highways and interstates, auto accidents tend to happen most often during lane changes. In either case, lives can be altered forever, or even ended, when drivers make serious errors in judgment or simply fail to pay attention.

For instance, troopers with the Louisiana State Police responded to a multiple vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 on a recent Thursday afternoon. Preliminary reports indicate that at approximately 4 p.m., the 33-year-old driver of a Chevy Tahoe failed to pay attention while changing lanes. The Tahoe ended up crashing into a motorcycle already in the lane.

The 64-year-old rider of that motorcycle was thrown off during the impact, and his motorcycle continued moving until it hit a truck. Sadly, he suffered fatal injuries at the scene. Neither the driver of the Tahoe nor the 27-year-old truck driver suffered any injuries.

The investigation remained ongoing at last report. As part of the inquiry, the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab is responsible for testing a toxicology sample from the Tahoe driver to determine whether impairment played a role in this crash. A determination regarding any criminal charges may wait until the investigation is complete.

In the meantime, the family of the motorcycle rider must bury its loved one and settle his estate. As part of those efforts, a wrongful death claim may be filed seeking restitution for damages sustained as a result of his death. As is the case in other auto accidents, evidence must be provided to the court establishing that the fatality resulted from the negligence of another, which resulted in financial losses and other damages.
