Fire presents an additional danger in auto accidents

Predicting what will happen during a motor vehicle collision is nearly impossible. Unexpected consequences arise in many auto accidents, and one of them is fire. When vehicles catch fire, the occupants face an additional danger that could cost them their lives. Fire more than likely contributed to the death of a Louisiana man in a recent crash on Interstate 10.

The accident occurred sometime before 5:30 p.m. on April 19. Preliminary reports indicate that traffic had slowed on I-10, but the driver of an 18-wheeler failed to slow in response to this change. The mammoth vehicle slammed into the back of one vehicle, which was pushed onto the shoulder, but not before it struck the back of a third vehicle.

That third vehicle was thrown into the back of another semi-truck, which then lurched forward and struck a fifth vehicle. The third vehicle and the two trucks burst into flames. The driver trapped inside the sandwiched car died. The others involved escaped serious injury. Even though impairment is not considered to be a factor in this tragedy, routine toxicology samples were taken from all of the drivers involved.

Charges are pending while the investigation continues. Regardless of what criminal charges may be filed in this crash, the family of the deceased victim have a separate right to pursue a wrongful death claim against the truck driver and his employer. If the evidence shows that the truck driver's actions caused or contributed to the death of their loved one, a Louisiana court could award damages seen in other auto accidents to surviving family members.
