Finding witnesses to deadly single-auto accidents is challenging

Some crashes have no witnesses when those involved die from their injuries before police arrive. This makes the job of troopers with the Louisiana State Police challenging since, other than the physical evidence left behind, they must take on the task of attempting to determine what factors led to these auto accidents and the events that precipitated them. This could be the challenge currently facing troopers and investigators in the aftermath of a single-vehicle crash that ended two lives.

The accident happened on Louisiana State Highway 57 at approximately 3:30 a.m. on a recent Saturday morning. Preliminary reports indicate that investigators surmise that the driver lost control of the vehicle as it came out of a slight turn. It then careened off the left side of the road and came to rest after slamming into a concrete foundation.

By the time emergency personnel arrived at the scene, both the driver and passenger had succumbed to the injuries they suffered in the impact. As part of the investigation, toxicology samples were collected from the deceased driver to determine whether impairment played a role in the crash. At the same time, they will more than likely attempt to find out if any other factors contributed.

Meanwhile, the family of the deceased passenger could exercise their right to file a wrongful death claim against the estate of the driver. If the evidence presented to the court establishes that the driver's actions negligently caused or contributed to the death of their loved one, an award of damages could be considered. Any restitution received could help defray the unexpected financial losses that accompany this and many other deadly auto accidents.
