Distracted driving auto accidents take the wheel in April

This month highlights the dangers of distracted driving. Many activities behind the wheel take a Louisiana driver's attention off the road, which leads to numerous auto accidents. Of course, texting and driving has gained attention as being one of the most dangerous distractions in modern society.

Approximately 47 percent of people see no problem with texting while driving, according to the National Safety Council. A family tracking app called Life360 reviewed its data and found that millions of its users are on their cell phones an average of approximately 1.78 times each trip. That adds up to numerous opportunities for something to go wrong and an accident to happen.

In addition, Life360 discovered that Louisiana came in second for the biggest number of cell phone users while driving in the country, second only to Mississippi. Alabama came in third. One of the largest group of offenders when it comes to texting and driving is teenagers. Around 27 percent of teens admit to texting while driving, and approximately 68 percent admit to using apps while driving. When these distractions are coupled with the inexperience of teenage drivers, it could be called a recipe for disaster.

So what does all of this mean? It means that numerous people across Louisiana and elsewhere will become victims of a distracted driver. For those who suffer serious injuries -- or families who lose loved ones -- filing a personal injury or wrongful death action could be appropriate. Providing the court with applicable evidence of negligence on the part of the distracted driver may result in a monetary judgment that provides the restitution needed to deal with the unexpected financial burdens that arise in the aftermath of auto accidents.
