Drunk driving charges affect several aspects of a driver's life

Many Louisiana residents might not make the right decision when it comes to getting behind the wheel after drinking. Drunk driving charges could affect both their personal and private lives. That mistake should not derail their lives -- especially without a conviction.

For example, a Louisiana sheriff's deputy was pulled over on a recent Thursday night at approximately 9:30 p.m. A trooper with the Louisiana State Police initiated the traffic stop on Highway 527 after supposedly observing the 58-year-old man's vehicle swerving. The trooper arrested the deputy on suspicion of improper lane usage and first-offense DWI.

The deputy was taken to the Bossier Parish Jail from which he was released on $1,200 bail. The Bossier Parish Sheriff's Department fired the man even though he has not been convicted of any offense. The deputy began working for the department in Aug. 2010.

Before this man has even faced the court regarding the alleged DWI, he was stripped of his employment. This factor alone could have devastating consequences for his professional and private lives. Not only does he need to deal with any potential charges, but he must also now worry about how to support himself and his family.

This man and his criminal defense attorney are likely focused on the details of the accusations and the available options handling the matter in court. Since the arrest was for a first offense, he might qualify for a pretrial diversion program or some other method of keeping the arrest and any charges off his record. An attorney who routinely deals with drunk driving charges would be familiar with these programs. In addition, an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his arrest could be conducted to assess whether his rights were violated. If so, it may be possible to have the charges reduced or dismissed in court.
