Alcohol-related auto accidents affect more than those involved

Before getting behind the wheel, drunk drivers fail to consider that their condition affects not only them and any vehicles they encounter, but other people as well. Alcohol-related auto accidents here in Louisiana and elsewhere do not occur in a vacuum in which only the drunk driver's vehicle and one other might be involved. Good Samaritans and other vehicles not involved in the initial impact are also at risk.

For example, a driver suspected of being impaired traveled the wrong way down Interstate 110 on a recent Friday morning. Not surprisingly, he encountered traffic heading in the right direction, and at approximately 3:30 a.m., he careened head-on into the vehicle of an unsuspecting driver. After a hard fought battle over the weekend, the 25-year-old victim died from the injuries he suffered in the impact.

He might not have survived that long had it not been for two passing motorists who stopped to help in the aftermath of the crash. One of those good Samaritans, a 44-year-old man, was pinned between the wrecked vehicles when an 18-wheeler crashed into them. He also died from his injuries. Two other people suffered serious injuries and that portion of the interstate was closed for hours during the investigation and cleanup.

The surviving victims and the families of the deceased individuals retain the right to file civil actions against the allegedly drunk driver. Even if that driver was not found to be legally drunk, the fact that he was driving the wrong way down the interstate eludes to negligence. Other parties might also be held responsible, such as the truck driver and his employer, if applicable. Successfully establishing to a Louisiana civil court that the driver's actions caused or contributed to the deaths and injuries suffered could result in monetary judgments for damages often awarded in auto accidents.
